This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 4.
At the Earvin Magic Johnson Recreation Area in Willowbrook, six GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, a now very tame SNOW GOOSE (between the two lakes) and an "Aleutian" CACKLING GOOSE (north lake) continue.
A female COMMON GOLDENEYE was seen on Ballona Creek on January 29. This bird was near the Lincoln Ave. crossing.
Off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo, just three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were present this week. These birds range from south of Imperial Highway to north of lifeguard tower #49. Street parking can be had nearby along Vista del Mar.
The RED-THROATED LOON continued on the main lake at Legg Lake in South El Monte through January 30.
BROWN PELICANS turned up at- or over- a number of locations away from the coast this past week (including La Mirada Park) and should be watched for inland.
The adult BALD EAGLE continues to be reported at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas, often near the east shore RV Park where it may be roosting.
A FERRUGINOUS HAWK in the Playa del Rey area continues. It was last seen near the junction of Waterview, Trask and Earldom on LAX property. Meanwhile, FERRUGINOUS HAWKS continue to be easy to find near agricultural fields in the Antelope Valley.
A LEWIS'S WOODPECKER continues by the San Gabriel Country Club in San Gabriel. It was last seen on January 30. Look for it on the east side of Del Mar north of Roses or if not there, try walking Roses to the country club gate and look for the bird in the large sycamore to the northeast.
Another LEWIS'S WOODPECKER was in Claremont on Mills Ave. at Westley on January 29.
Continuing at Veteran's Park in Sylmar is a male WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER. It was reported through January 30 between lamp post #20 and the children's play area. An immature YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues here and two TOWNSEND'S SOLITARES were at Veteran's Park on January 30.
A female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER continues at Mt. Sinai near Burbank. Take the main entrance road about 150 yards from the gate and look for a stone trash receptacle and two metal sprinkler boxes. From here walk upslope (right) toward the west wall and look for the bird in the pines.
An adult YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER continues at Ed Vincent Park in Inglewood. It is usually in the silk oaks near the tennis courts.
The TROPICAL KINGBIRD continues at Legg Lake in South El Monte. It is usually seen around the south lake.
Eight MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were along the San Gabriel River on January 28. These birds were on the east side of the river below the Valley crossing.
A NASHVILLE WARBLER was at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach on February 2. It was in bottlebrush above the fence near the southeast edge of the park.
The BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER in Pasadena was reported through January 30. Look for this bird in the trees in front of the Panda Inn restaurant on the south side of Foothill Blvd. near Halstead.
A PAINTED REDSTART found at Loyola Marymount University was seen through January 30. It has been in the carob tree and in pines near the chapel bell tower. Parking on campus during the week can be a problem. Parking lot H is the closest, or one can park off campus on West 80th Street near Loyola Blvd and walk north to the bell tower.
Another PAINTED REDSTART continues near the Nature Center in Monrovia Canyon, though it ranges throughout this general area.
A male BALTIMORE ORIOLE was found at the LA National Cemetery on January 30. An adult male SUMMER TANAGER was also in this area. The location is along the east border fence near the "T" intersection of cemetery roads Antietam and Appomatox. Both birds were seen through February 3.
VENTURA COUNTY-
The RED-NECKED GREBE continues at the Ventura Marina. It was reported near Marina Park (north side of the channel) on January 31. It has been visible in the past from near the end of Spinaker Drive on the south side of the harbor channel.
