This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for August 18.


The female LONG-TAILED DUCK continues along the LA River in Long Beach just below Willow Street. It was reported through August 18.

The RED-BREASTED MERGANSER continued on the lake at Harbor Regional Park in Harbor City through August 14. Another continued at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas through August 11.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was along the LA River below Burbank Blvd. in the Sepulveda Basin on August 18.

The adult SABINE’S GULL along the LA River in Cudahy from August 15. It has been seen south of Clara Street, but moves up and down the river.

YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS continue at the Ballona Freshwater Marsh in Playa Vista. Most frequently they have been near the bend of the marsh adjacent to the corner of Lincoln and Jefferson. Several have been present and at least one bird was reported there through August 18.

A VERMILION FLYCATCHER was at Castaic Lagoon on August 9.

A CALIFORNIA GNATCATCHER was at Madrona Marsh in Torrance on August 9. Preserve hours are 10-5 Tuesday through Sunday.

A BLACK-TAILED GNATCATCHER was on Edwards AFB (letter of permission required) on August 12.

Single INDIGO BUNTINGS were in the Sepulveda Basin near Van Nuys (seen at the mouth of Haskell Creek, where it enters the LA River) on August 11 and at Peck Road Water Conservation Park (along the shore of the south lake) in Arcadia on August 9.
