LOS ANGELES AUDUBON HELPS RESTORE SCHOOL YARD Print E-mail

Los Angeles Audubon has formed a partnership with Leo Politi Elementary School to expand the scope of science-based nature activities the school offers its students. As a first step, Los Angeles Audubon has successfully applied for a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Grant to install a native habitat on 6,000 square feet of underutilized school yard.

Dorsey High School students participating in Los Angeles Audubon’s Restoration Leader and Green House Intern programs are acting as mentors to Leo Politi GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students, teaching the GATE kids about soils, native plants, water requirements, orientation, and native fauna. The GATE kids will, in turn, mentor their peers at Leo Politi.  All this mentoring and preparation will culminate on Saturday, November 7th when Dorsey and Leo P GATE students shepherd the Leo Politi community through installation of the habitat!

Los Angeles Audubon and Leo Politi Elementary School invite you to celebrate the installation and dedication to songwriter Johnny Mercer of our School Yard Habitat.

When: Saturday, November 7, 2009
Time: 9am – noon
Where: Leo Politi Elementary School, 2481 West Eleventh Street, Los Angeles, CA 90006
